Our latest Space Champion: Lacey Dutton

THEN there were three – introducing our latest, and third, Space Champion: Lacey Dutton.

The 13-year-old becomes the youngest member to be inducted as an ambassador for the summer-long Space programme, following the recent appointment of ex-Port Vale footballer Adam Yates and 14-year-old Olivia Hopwood.

Space was introduced by the Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis, with a view to bringing together public, voluntary and private sector organisations to help nurture, support and guide youngsters across the county. Mr Ellis was on hand to meet and greet our latest ambassador during a visit to Burslem Park, where all three Champions were on hand to promote a whole day of activities.

Stoke-on-Trent youngster Lacey is a triple county champion in her year group, having won events in the shot put, long jump and hurdles. Her next aims are to compete in the 200 metres and javelin, with ambitions to represent Great Britain’s junior team.

She said: ‘It’s an absolute honour to be named as a Space champion. I want to encourage other young children and older people to be involved in sport and in the community. Rather than be indoors on your iPad or Xbox it’s nice to be outside doing something active.’

PCC Matthew Ellis said: “It’s absolutely wonderful to see Lacey’s passion and devotion to something she clearly loves so much.

Space 2018 will continue with its aim of increasing skills, improving health and wellbeing – also creating opportunities for young people to take part in positive activities to make communities safer.

Our Champions are doing a brilliant job of promoting Space, which promises to be our biggest yet. All power to their elbow. I wish Lacey, Olivia and Adam all the best.”

The Space summer schedule has been mapped out, with a full list of activities available on the events page. Book now, to avoid disappointment.
